MyDecision/MiDecisión

"iPad tablet displaying MyDecision"

Get all of the facts. Know all of your options. It's your decision.

Prior research has identified gaps in comprehension surrounding tubal sterilization among women who underwent the procedure. Research also shows that inadequate pre-sterilization counseling is linked with post-sterilization regret. MyDecision/MiDecisión is a web-based decision aid designed to help those considering tubal sterilization make informed, value-concordant birth control decisions. The decision aid significantly increases tubal sterilization knowledge and significantly decreases decision conflict. MyDecision/MiDecisión has the potential to improve the tubal sterilization consent process in clinical settings and support patients’ birth control decision-making.

There are 4 main components of the decision aid:

Development and Testing of the Tool

MyDecision/MiDecisión was created by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh, University of California San Francisco, and University of Tennessee (Principal Investigator: Sonya Borrero, MD MS). It was developed through a stakeholder-engaged process including a needs assessment, diverse Steering Committee, cognitive interviews, and beta testing (read more about the process here).

We also conducted a needs assessment with 40 women on lower incomes (who had considered tubal sterilization) and 15 OBGYNs. Results from the interviews helped inform development of MyDecision/MiDecisión. Findings from the interviews with OBGYNs were published in Contraception (needs assessment).

We tested MyDecision/MiDecisión in a randomized clinical trial funded by the National Institutes of Health (R01 MD011678). This decision aid significantly increases tubal sterilization knowledge and significantly decreases decision conflict. Our primary findings have been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (read the full article here).
